In April 2020, as the world was entering its first COVID-19 lockdown, my own world came to an abrupt stop.
What began as severe pain quickly turned into a medical emergency. I was admitted to hospital and underwent surgery after experiencing a ruptured ectopic pregnancy, resulting in the loss of one of my fallopian tubes. In the midst of uncertainty and restrictions, I found myself facing not only a physical recovery, but an emotional and mental one as well.
The weeks and months that followed were challenging. I was grieving, healing, and trying to make sense of an experience that had changed me forever. Slowly, I began to rebuild. I returned to my work in healthcare, cared for my family, and focused on moving forward one day at a time.
Just as life was beginning to feel normal again, October brought another unexpected chapter.
I experienced a second ectopic pregnancy. This time, it was identified before a rupture occurred, and I underwent laparoscopic surgery in an attempt to save my remaining fallopian tube. During the process, doctors also discovered an inactive pregnancy within my uterus. Learning that I had likely conceived twins brought a new layer of grief and complexity to an already difficult situation.
Initially, it appeared the surgery had been successful. However, within a week I was back in hospital suffering from a serious infection and significant pain. After more than seven hours waiting for answers, I was taken into surgery once again. This time, my remaining fallopian tube had to be removed.
Of all the physical recoveries I have faced, this was by far the hardest. The physical healing was only one part of the journey. I was also navigating grief, loss, and the reality that I would no longer be able to conceive naturally. It was a season filled with questions, sadness, and acceptance.
Looking back now, I can see that this chapter became a turning point in my understanding of health and wellbeing. It taught me that healing is rarely just physical. It involves our emotions, our mindset, our relationships, our faith, and the way we care for ourselves through life's most difficult moments.
While I would never have chosen this path, it shaped the person I am today. It deepened my compassion, strengthened my resilience, and sparked a passion for understanding wellbeing from a truly holistic perspective. It taught me that wellness is not simply the absence of illness, it's learning how to support yourself, honor your journey, and continue moving forward even when life doesn't unfold as planned.
This experience became one of the many foundations that started with Holistique Fitness and then formed into Holistique Collective. It reinforced my belief that true wellbeing comes from caring for the whole person and creating space for healing in all its forms.
Sometimes our greatest challenges become the very things that lead us to our purpose.
